Children & Environmental Toxins is a children's environmental health science book co-authored by Professor Philip J. Landrigan, Director of the Global Public Health Program at Boston College, and Mary M. Landrigan. The book systematically outlines the environmental toxins children may encounter in their homes, schools, food, daily necessities, and living environments, and also provides protective advice for families.

In 2025, Toxics-Free Corps held two book club sessions on Children & Environmental Toxins. The two sessions began with early morning shared reading and gradually evolved into a family-oriented environmental health education practice: participants not only shared an understanding of the issue of environmental toxins affecting children, but also translated the knowledge from the book into family checks, consumption choices, and daily actions.
From the first to the second session: How the book club progressed
In 2025, Toxics-Free Corps held two book club sessions on Children & Environmental Toxins, with parents, educators, ecological agriculture practitioners, families preparing for pregnancy, and parents of one or two children from Beijing, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Ningbo, Wuhan, Chengdu, Xi'an, Lanzhou, Jiujiang, Chaohu, Nanning, and other places participating.
The two book club sessions comprised 23 morning shared study sessions, with 25 core participants/families participating in a total of 9,502 minutes (approximately 158.4 hours) of shared study. This resulted in 531 learning and action check-ins and the compilation of over 25,000 words of shared study notes. Through rotating reading sessions, chapter breakdowns, community discussions, and continuous check-ins, the book club gradually evolved from a simple book reading session into a community-based educational practice focused on family environmental health. From the first session's focus on awareness and community empowerment to the second session's emphasis on hazard identification and action upgrades, participants not only systematically understood the environmental toxins children might encounter but also began to translate this knowledge into daily actions. They paid attention to items in their homes such as toys, tableware, cleaning products, furniture, and food packaging, and established family-level child health protection through safer purchasing, cleaning, dietary, and home furnishing choices.
If the first session was more like a systematic introduction, then the second session went further, focusing on "hazard identification" and "action upgrades." Participants no longer just learned concepts, but began to bring the knowledge back to their homes, checking household items, adjusting purchasing habits, sharing safety information, and continuously helping each other within the community. Registration fees from both sessions were donated proportionally to Toxics-Free Corps' "Giving Children a Healthy Future" public welfare project to support more public welfare initiatives related to the safety of children's products and daily necessities.
Turn professional knowledge into methods that can be used in the home
Children & Environmental Toxins covers a wealth of specialized content, including lead, air pollutants, allergens, endocrine disruptors, food contaminants, pesticides, plasticizers, and heavy metals. While this information is important, it can be difficult for the average family to understand.
The book club transforms professional knowledge into more easily implemented home protection methods through rotating reading sessions, chapter breakdowns, mind mapping, supplementary materials, localized discussions, and daily check-ins.

In the learning session about lead, participants realized that there is no safe threshold for lead in children and began to pay attention to potential sources of risk, such as old water pipes, dust in window crevices, lead-containing paint, and substandard colored toys and tableware. They also summarized more specific protective measures, such as letting cold water run in the kitchen before using it in the morning, consistently using wet cleaning methods, and avoiding purchasing colored children's products without clear standards.
In the section on endocrine disruptors, phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) were among the main topics of discussion. Many participants began checking their homes for plastic tableware, food packaging, toiletries, PVC tablecloths, aged plastic products, and fragranced cosmetics, and tried replacing high-risk products with safer materials.
In the section on food and food contact materials, participants focused on food safety, including issues such as food packaging, disposable containers, moldy grains and nuts, cutting boards, refrigerator cleaning, pesticide residues, and the origin of ingredients. Some people started bringing their own utensils and reducing the use of foam containers; some checked the implementation standards when buying flour; and others paid more attention to the use of pesticides and insecticides by older family members.
From Reading to Action: Concrete Changes in Families
The most important outcome of a book club is not just finishing a book, but enabling participants to translate knowledge into action.
Some participants began adjusting their kitchenware, replacing non-stick pans and rice cooker inner pots with damaged coatings, and plastic steamers; some discarded PVC waterproof tablecloths in their home; others removed the thermal paper labels that might contain BPA before using cardboard boxes for storage. Other participants focused on changes in their diet and shopping. After learning about the risks of disposable foam lunch boxes, some chose to bring their own utensils when buying food; when purchasing children's products, they proactively checked the materials, implementation standards, and 3C certification; and they chose to return or abandon products with a pungent odor or unclear information. Some participants also began sharing what they learned with family and friends. For example, reminding elders to be careful about pesticide use, agreeing with family members to let cold water run in the kitchen before using it in the morning, and increasing the frequency of wet cleaning. For many families, these actions were not complicated, but they transformed "environmental toxin protection" from a book concept into a part of daily life.

In the second book club session, participants became more proficient in using the "Little Maruko AI" tool from Toxics-Free Corps, enabling them to query product safety information, identify hang tags, understand quality inspection reports, and assess consumer product risks. AI tools have made some specialized information easier for ordinary families to understand and use.
Why are book clubs like this important?
Children's environmental health issues don't just exist in laboratories, reports, or policy documents. They also exist in everyday details such as home shopping, kitchenware, toy selection, cleaning habits, food packaging, and indoor air management. However, for ordinary consumers, risk information is often fragmented, technical, and opaque. Product advertisements may emphasize "environmentally friendly," "non-toxic," and "suitable for mothers and babies," but they may not provide clear information on materials, standards, and testing. Even if parents want to protect their children, they often lack the tools to make informed judgments.
Book club's Children & Environmental Toxins sessions attempts to address this very gap: transforming professional knowledge into actionable guidelines that families can understand, discuss, and implement. Through two sessions of shared study, Toxics-Free Corps have further realized that consumer education is not just one-way science popularization. It can be a form of community-based mutual assistance: some lead the reading, some research, some take notes, some share product experiences, and some bring the changes back to their families. Every small change can become part of protecting children's environmental health.
In the future, Toxics-Free Corps will continue to focus on children's product safety, chemical risks in daily necessities, and toxic-free family living through shared study, public welfare testing, consumer education, and exploration of digital tools to help more families see and understand the risks and take more evidence-based actions.
