Some schoolbags use transparent plastic, artificial leather, decorative soft materials, and plastic-covered zipper pulls, among other components, which may contain phthalate plasticizers.

Student Schoolbags Safety Survey: Beware of "Hidden Harmful Substances" in Plastic Accessories

‌Every school season, covering new books with book covers is a common choice for many families with elementary school children. Several years ago, the issue of "toxic book covers" attracted public attention. In September 2025, Toxics-Free Corps launched another investigation into plastic book covers.

Plastic book covers are generally performing well, but caution is still warranted regarding PVC materials.

‌PVC sandals are popular with parents and children due to their vibrant colors and diverse styles. However, PVC itself is relatively hard and usually requires the addition of plasticizers to make it soft. Phthalates are commonly used due to their low cost and wide availability.

A three-year survey of children's plastic sandals shows a decrease in phthalate exceedance rates, but Three-no products still pose a high risk.

‌In order to monitor whether the PVC children's sandals sold on e-commerce platforms meet the requirements of national mandatory standards and ensure the safety of consumers' online shopping products, in March 2025, Toxic-Free Corps used "children's sandals PVC" as the search keyword and sorted the top 10 samples from JD.com, Taobao, Pinduoduo, Douyin Mall, and Kuaishou Mall according to sales volume from high to low, and select the size of infant shoes (≤170mm).
